Recognising the Warning Signs
Early symptoms of heat-related illness include excessive sweating, fatigue, dizziness, headache, muscle cramps, and irritability. If these signs are ignored, the condition can escalate to heat exhaustion, marked by nausea, weakness, and a rapid pulse, and ultimately to heat stroke, a medical emergency involving confusion, loss of consciousness, and a dangerously elevated body temperature. Workers and supervisors should be trained to recognise these stages early, because prompt action, such as moving the affected person to shade, providing water, and cooling the body, can prevent serious harm.
Practical Prevention Strategies
Employers have a duty to design work schedules and environments that reduce heat exposure. This includes scheduling strenuous tasks during cooler parts of the day, increasing the frequency of rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas, and ensuring easy access to cool drinking water throughout the shift. Acclimatisation matters too; workers returning from leave or new to outdoor roles need a gradual introduction to heat exposure rather than a full workload on day one. Lightweight, breathable clothing and, where appropriate, personal cooling equipment can further reduce physiological strain. Buddy systems, where colleagues monitor each other for signs of distress, add an extra layer of protection, particularly in remote or isolated work sites.
Building a Culture of Heat Safety
Beyond individual measures, organisations benefit from a structured heat safety policy that includes monitoring weather forecasts, adjusting activity levels based on heat index readings, and providing first aid training specific to heat illness. Regular health surveillance for workers with pre-existing conditions, such as cardiovascular disease or diabetes, is also important since these individuals face higher risk.
