Where noise cannot be eliminated, personal protective equipment such as properly fitted earmuffs or earplugs must be provided and workers trained on correct usage. Rotating staff through high-noise tasks to limit continuous exposure time is another effective administrative control. Employers have a duty of care to ensure these measures are not just available but actively used and monitored.
The Value of Regular Audiometric Screening
Periodic hearing tests, known as audiometric screening, allow early detection of hearing threshold shifts before workers themselves become aware of any change. Establishing a baseline hearing test at the start of employment, followed by annual or biennial screenings for at-risk employees, gives occupational health providers the ability to flag concerning trends and intervene early, whether through reassignment, enhanced protection, or medical referral.
